A tooth that has been heavily filled, cracked, or treated with a root canal has lost internal structure. Bonding a thin shell to the front of it does not restore the strength it lost. A crown wraps the whole tooth and lets it take load again.
That is why a good plan sometimes proposes crowns on the back teeth and veneers on the front ones in the same case. They are answering different problems that happen to sit in the same mouth.
The clinic publishes a porcelain crown at US$299. Root canal treatment, when a tooth needs it before the crown, is published separately at US$200-350.
THE MARGIN
Where crowns are won or lost
The part of a crown that decides its long life is the margin: the line where the restoration meets the tooth at the gum. A margin that fits cleanly is invisible and stays healthy. A margin that does not becomes the place where problems begin.
Digital impressions have made that fit more predictable than the impression trays most patients remember, because the scan can be checked and re-taken in seconds instead of being discovered as inadequate at the laboratory.
