Lumineers is a proprietary name for a particular ultra-thin ceramic veneer system. It is often presented as though thinness alone were the benefit, which is where most of the confusion around it comes from.
Thinness is genuinely useful when a tooth should be reduced as little as possible. It is less useful when the existing tooth is dark, crowded or rotated, because a very thin ceramic transmits what is underneath rather than covering it.

A claim worth correcting
A common line about ultra-thin veneers is that they change colour without changing shape. That is not accurate as a general statement: adding material to the front of a tooth changes its contour, however slightly, and in some cases that is exactly the intention.
